Die-cut masking pieces in 1:48 scale for the Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6. A pair of stencils masks the canopy from the outer and the inner face, another pair belongs to the national insignia.

The Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6 reached the units in 1943 and became the most numerously built form of the whole family. Its recognition features are the covers over the breeches of the MG 131 machine guns ahead of the windscreen, which modelers nickname the bulges. It was in this version that the machine most often went into action over the territory of Germany, where day and night groups beat off the raids of the Allied bomber formations.
Units deployed to defend home territory were given colored identification bands around the rear part of the fuselage. A blue, red, yellow or white band distinguished the individual fighter formations and allowed ground observers to tell at a distance whom the aircraft belonged to. Alongside the band, a system of symbols was worn on the sides: a horizontal bar marked one group, a wavy line another, arrows and circles belonged to command machines. A numeral ahead of the cross then belonged to a particular aircraft within a squadron and its color corresponded to the order of the squadron in the group.
The die-cut pieces follow the framing of the canopy and lie against it from both faces, so the glass stays transparent from inside the cockpit too. The second pair of stencils belongs to the national insignia. A sprayed cross has a crisp edge and lies directly in the paint; it does not rise above the surface and there is no risk of the silvering that can ruin an otherwise successful model. Before applying, the base only has to be freed of grease and left to dry thoroughly. Anyone building a machine with a colored band will appreciate that a stencil stays in place through several coats of finish.
