Cut masks in 1:48 for the Messerschmitt Bf 109K-4, the last production form of the type. Two pieces go on the canopy from both faces, one on the insignia.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Bf 109K-4 went into production in the autumn of 1944 as an attempt to unify fragmented manufacture into a single standard. It received the DB 605D engine with the option of a short-term increase in power, a tall wooden vertical tail surface, a deeper tailwheel cover and reworked covers on the upper side of the nose. From outside it is told from the late machines of the G series mainly by the position of the filler points and the shape of the engine cowling. The vertical surface was usually of substitute wood and its shade often differed from the rest of the airframe.
At the close of the war the insignia were simplified to a minimum. On many machines the white fill was left out and only a thin light outline of the cross remained on the fuselage, on some examples even on one side only. On the fin the works number was written in narrow lettering, sprayed on at the factory and often the only reliable record of an aircraft's origin. The units added a colored band around the rear fuselage and a numeral by the cross, and hastily oversprayed markings of a previous user were no exception either. Rapid production and rapid moves meant that two machines from the same batch could look entirely different.
It is precisely with an outline cross that the sprayed variant is markedly more convincing. A decal has a carrier film that easily breaks on the thin arms and shows through on a matte finish. A stencil, by contrast, leaves the paint lying directly on the surface. The glazing is masked from both faces so that the frames are visible with the canopy slid back too. A pressurized cockpit has thicker glass, so the frames appear narrower than they really are.
