About product

A weapon for the fight over a bunker

A rifle round can do nothing against a concrete shelter and a grenade has to hit the embrasure. That leaves fire, and that is why from 1944 the M2-2 backpack flamethrower became standard equipment for assault squads. It carried three cylinders, two with fuel and one with compressed nitrogen, and it got rid of the weakest point of its predecessors, namely the electrical ignition that failed in tropical damp. A cartridge ignition head in the wand replaced it. In the fighting on the Pacific islands a soldier armed like this often decided the advance of a whole company, and paid for it by being singled out as the enemy's first target.

Box contents

The set holds seven cast polyurethane parts, a fret of photo-etched parts and decals. The etched metal allows the straps and buckles to be made thin, and the decals carry the warning and filling markings of the cylinders.

Painting

The cylinders were at first glossy olive, later matte, and in the field they were replaced from various stocks, so two shades could easily sit side by side on one set. The wand tended to be scorched to a blue-gray, the hose dusty and the straps darker with sweat. The weapon was set down on the ground in the field, so the underside of a cylinder belongs muddy.

Everything is worked out for 1:35 scale, that is for a figure carrying the set on his back.

The set in motion

A lit weapon could neither be set down nor thrown away, so it was carried hunched over, with the hose slung over the forearm and the wand held in both hands. The pose of the figure therefore decides more than the casting itself. It also belongs to the scene that the man carrying it was always covered by comrades firing at the embrasures of the shelter.

It abandoned the electrical ignition that failed in damp and used a cartridge head in the wand instead.

Above all the Pacific islands of 1944 and 1945, where fortified shelters were taken, but it served in Europe as well.

A wand scorched to blue-gray, a dusty hose, straps darkened with sweat and a muddy underside to the cylinders from being set down on the ground.
