An extended set of wet transfers for the Messerschmitt Bf 109 in the North African campaign, 1:48 scale. Five sheets: one with markings and four with technical stencils for the F version and for the G to K versions.
Responsibility details are not available.
A wet transfer differs from an ordinary decal in that no carrier film stays on the model once it has been transferred. The color sits directly on the paint, no glossy outline forms anywhere and the transition over a rivet or a pressing is smooth. The price for that is a different working technique: the transfer is applied through a backing and will not take being shifted back and forth, so its position is decided on the first try.
The set is designated as the extended version and consists of five sheets. One carries the markings proper for aircraft of the North African theater, two are technical stencils for the F version and another two cover the later versions from G to K. There are therefore twice as many stencils as on the separately sold sheets, which matches the fact that small maintenance stencils are used up the fastest and tend to run short.
The base has to be smooth and completely dry. The sheet is laid face down on the spot, moistened from behind and, after a few tens of seconds, the backing is carefully taken off. Anyone working this way for the first time should start with a stencil on the underside of the fuselage, where a mistake will not be in plain view. An overcoat of matte varnish ties the result together. Desert aircraft also take noticeably more chipping than machines from Europe, so a small imperfection here blends into the overall impression.
