1:48 Bristol 171 Sycamore Mk 52 / Mk 14 / HR14 is a short-run plastic kit of the British rescue and liaison helicopter from AMP, with the option of building several service forms.
Responsibility details are not available.
The kit captures the British Bristol Type 171 Sycamore helicopter, in the forms designated Mk 52 and Mk 14, or HR Mk 14. The package is therefore laid out so that a modeler can choose between the export and the British service form. It is a short-run injection-molded kit of the kind AMP issues for unconventional subjects from the early era of helicopters.
The Sycamore was one of the first British helicopters to reach series production and ordinary service. It was powered by a radial piston engine mounted behind the cabin, its main rotor had four blades, and the glazed nose gave the crew an exceptional view. The machines came into their own mainly in the rescue, liaison and training roles; they served with the Royal Air Force, with foreign users and in civil operation. It was the rescue work in particular that made them one of the most photographed helicopters of the 1950s.
The extensive cabin glazing is the key to this type, so prepare the masking in advance and glue the clear part in with a cement that does not fog clear plastics. The interior shows through the glazing, so it is worth devoting time to it. Strengthen the thin landing gear legs and the rotor head with a dry-fitted match and glue them on only after the fuselage is painted. Paint the rotor blades separately and fit them at the end.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
