A wooden coffin, which the manufacturer's name also gives in German as Sarg, in 1:48 scale from the MAiM brand. This is not a kit but a diorama accessory, a prop that tells a story in a scene at once. Few accessories carry so much dramatic content in such a small area, from a quiet village scene through a wartime vignette to western or historical subjects.
A coffin comes into its own in wartime scenes as a reminder of the cost of a conflict, by a church or a graveyard in civilian village buildings, in a carpenter's workshop, on a cart and in a western town. In 1:48 scale, which aircraft kits and some figures share, it will also serve as a striking element in an airfield vignette. It is effective on its own too, because a simple vignette with a coffin and a single figure often has more emotional force than a crowded base.
Clean the casting up, wash it and prime it. You imitate wood faithfully with an acrylic base in light brown and fine graining in oil paint drawn out with a flat brush. Depending on the scene you can treat the coffin as new, in planed wood, or age it with a wash and pigments. Bring the details of the fittings out with a metallic shade on the edge of a dry brush.
The accessory is supplied unpainted and may need a little cleaning up. Paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
