Part two of the Xtradecal decal series in 1:48 scale for the de Havilland DH.82A Tiger Moth biplane is, according to the name, devoted to civil schemes. That is a different world from military camouflage: colored finishes, registrations on the fuselage and the wings, and often prominent additional lines. The product is a separate decal sheet, that is, an accessory — the model of the aircraft itself and the paints are not included in the package. The particular registrations and the number of options are given in the instructions enclosed with the sheet.
After its military service ended, the Tiger Moth passed into civilian hands in large numbers. Cheap and durable biplanes served flying clubs for basic training and were used for towing gliders, for crop spraying and for sport and sightseeing flying. That is exactly why civil machines look far more varied than military ones: silver, yellow or two-tone finishes, prominent registrations and not infrequently sponsor or club markings as well. A number of aircraft are still flying today, so a model can be built from a current, well-documented machine.
Civil schemes are usually on a gloss finish, which is the ideal surface for decals — it is enough to polish the rest of the surface and silvering is practically out of the question. Lay long registrations on a wing onto a wet surface, so that you can still align them against the ribs, and keep checking that they stay parallel. Lettering across struts and wires is better applied before you close the structure. Once it is dry, lay on a gloss or satin varnish — on a civil machine, evening everything out in matte usually does the look more harm than good.
