The winter at the turn of 1940 and 1941 gave this type a role it had not been designed for, and which suited it even so. In the dark over British cities it did not have to reach its target head on; it was enough to stay under a bomber and let the four barrels in the rotating gun position work. In the tally of kills for that season it came first among the night fighters of the Royal Air Force. Later examples finished their service as target tugs and in air-sea rescue, so a machine in black night finish as well as in day camouflage can be built from one marking.
A freshly uncovered roundel looks as if it came from an exhibition hall. On a real machine it stayed deep for a few weeks and then the wind, the oil and the sun took it. The finest tool here is abrasive paper of the highest grit or an ordinary eraser: a light pass takes only a hundredth of the layer off the surface and the paint loses its depth without the edge being damaged. With a decal that is not possible at all. The second step is a barely perceptible cloud of the base shade taken across the center of the marking, which reduces its contrast. And thirdly it helps if the wear is not repeated in the same way on both sides. A machine always stood on its dispersal with one side to the prevailing wind and the other toward the hardstanding, so perfect symmetry is the least credible option on a model.
