Five camouflage schemes for the Dornier Do 17Z, from the campaign in Poland through the Battle of Britain to a Croatian unit on the Eastern Front. Completed by masks for the canopy.
Responsibility details are not available.
A slender fuselage earned the Dornier Do 17 a nickname that caught on all over Europe. The Z version with a glazed forward section and radial engines was the most numerous and went through the whole first period of the war. This sheet captures it in three different periods and on three theaters, so a small developmental series comes out of a single set.
The oldest pair of machines took off in September 1939 from an East Prussian base, that is from the first days of the campaign against Poland. There follows a machine from a Belgian airfield of 1940 and a bomber deployed over England in the fall of the same year, when the Do 17Z made up the core of the daylight formations. The last variant is an aircraft of a Croatian group operating in 1942 on the Eastern Front, which is the most interesting item of the whole range in terms of color.
The four-character codes of the German bomber units are the feature on a model that determines its identity. The letters have a color distinction according to belonging to a Staffel and a unit, so it pays to compare them with the illustrated instructions before reaching for the scissors.
Besides the markings, masks for the glazed parts are enclosed. The extensive glass nose of the type means otherwise drawn-out masking, and ready-made shapes shorten this part of the build markedly. The film is laid on a smoothly polished gloss, the excess water is drawn off and the whole model is matted down only once the markings have safely dried.
