A set of wet transfers in 1:48 scale from the firm HGW, intended for a model of the Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat carrier fighter. It covers national insignia and identification markings as well as stencil markings, that is the small service and warning inscriptions distributed over the whole airframe of the real machine. It is not a kit or a part of a model, but an accessory with which the modeler replaces or supplements the markings supplied in the base box.
An ordinary decal carries the print on a transparent carrier film and that film stays on the model once dry. Held up to the light, a glossy rim or a slight step above the surface is then visible around the motif. With a wet transfer the carrier is pulled off after transfer and only the paint itself is left on the surface, hundredths of a millimeter thick. The result comes close to spraying through a stencil, which in 1:48 scale is clearly apparent on large national insignia as well as on fine lines of stencil markings.
The base should be smooth and ideally coated with gloss varnish. The trimmed motif is soaked in water, laid in place and pressed down; after a short while the carrier layer is carefully lifted off and the transfer is left to dry. Work one piece at a time and do not rush: as long as the base is damp the position can still be corrected, but no longer once it has dried. At the end a pass of matte or satin varnish is useful, as it unifies the markings with the paint around them.
This is a modeling accessory, not a model. The kit, paints and varnishes are not included in the package.
