A pair of 1:48 sheets with the German lozenge camouflage of the First World War, rendered in four colors. One sheet is for the upper surfaces, the other for the lower.
Responsibility details are not available.
During the First World War the German air service introduced the printing of fabric with an irregular mosaic of colored lozenges. It was an exceptionally progressive idea: printed fabric replaced laborious hand painting, saved weight and broke up the outline of a machine better than the single-color finishes of the day. The patterns differed in the number of colors and in their orientation, and different sets of shades were used for the upper and lower surfaces, because each surface was seen in a different way.
This item covers the four-color version of the pattern and comes as two separate sheets, one for the upper and one for the lower surfaces. That matters for the build, because covering a biplane with a lozenge pattern means covering practically the whole surface of the wings and often the sides of the fuselage with decals. Without a separate sheet for the underside the result would not be faithful.
Working with an all-over print differs from ordinary markings. Cut along the ribs and divide the area into strips matching the individual panels of the covering. Let each strip settle separately and squeeze the air out from under it with a soft cloth from the middle toward the edges. Patience pays off: the seams that follow one another must line up, otherwise the pattern breaks the visual continuity. Finally, unify the whole surface with a semi-matte coat.
The final effect is among the most striking things that can be shown on a model of the Great War period, and it will reward even a builder who has so far avoided biplanes.
Only the printed sheets are supplied. The biplane kit and the glue are not included.
