About product

1:48 I-153 and I-15bis decals, Winter War 1939-40, Colibri Decals

A separate sheet of waterslide decals in 1:48 scale. It is not an aircraft model but an accessory with which you equip an already built or part-built kit of the Polikarpov I-153 and I-15bis biplanes. The set concentrates on the period of the winter conflict of 1939 to 1940, when the machines often flew in an improvised winter finish. The extent of the sheet and the list of aircraft covered are given on the maker's box.

The real subject

The I-15bis was a development continuation of the I-15 biplane fighter, with a straight upper wing instead of the characteristic cranked leading edge. The I-153 followed on from it, returned to the cranked upper wing and added manually retractable main landing gear, which improved its speed a little while keeping the agility of a biplane. Both types were powered by radial engines and both were already at the limit of the useful life of their design at the turn of the 1930s and 1940s, yet they stayed in service for a long time.

Use and application tips

On biplanes the decals often end up close to the rigging wires and bracing, so trim the motif as closely as possible and use flat-jawed tweezers to position it. Prepare the base with a clear gloss varnish so that the film beds down without bubbles. Fabric areas with pronounced rib structure call for a decal softener; it is applied in two thin coats with time to dry between them, so that the decal does not roll up. The winter overspray in white tended to be rubbed and uneven on these machines, so a little of the base showing through and worn edges on the markings look convincing. Finally, even the surface out with matte varnish.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building Soviet biplanes in 1:48 scale
  • anyone interested in aviation history at the turn of the 1930s and 1940s
  • those who want markings other than the ones the box offers
  • builders of display-case groups of several machines of one type

This is an accessory, namely decals. The kit, paints and varnishes are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No, the package holds only a sheet of decals in 1:48 scale. The kit has to be bought separately.

According to the name the sheet covers markings for the I-153 as well as the I-15bis. How the particular options are divided between the two types is given by the maker on the box.

A gloss base and a decal softener applied in two thin coats both help. The film then beds down to the profile without bubbles.
