A sheet of waterslide decals in 1:48 scale intended as an accessory for a kit of the I-16 fighter. The set is marked as the first part, so it forms a pair with the following sheet of the same series. It is not an aircraft model or a complete conversion set: you are buying only the markings with which you replace the decals supplied with the base kit. The particular contents of the sheet are declared by the maker on the box.
The Polikarpov I-16 was one of the first mass-produced monoplanes with retractable landing gear and an enclosed, later again open, pilot's cockpit. It is marked by its short, barrel-like fuselage of wooden monocoque construction, a radial engine and a very short rear end, which made the aircraft agile but sensitive to handle. The later production type 24 received a more powerful engine, strengthened wing structure and usually also changes to the tailwheel landing gear. The individual batches differed in armament and in details of the engine cowling.
The I-16 has a lot of rounded areas and a short fuselage, so it is advisable to divide large motifs or to lay them down gradually from the middle outward. Treat the base with gloss varnish, soak the decal in lukewarm water and let it rest a while out of the water; the film will then release by itself and you do not have to drag it. On the smooth-surfaced wooden fuselage the decals hold easily, while at the transitions to the engine cowling a decal softener helps. Once dry, carefully blot the remains of water at the edges and seal the area with matte or satin varnish, depending on how weather-beaten you want the aircraft to look.
This is an accessory, namely decals. The kit, paints and varnishes are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
