A detailing set in photo-etched brass sheet, not a kit of an aircraft. It holds the lap and shoulder belts matching the late period of service of Imperial Japanese Navy aircraft. The late form differed from the earlier one in shorter belts and in the shaping of the ends, so the set is not interchangeable with the older types and is intended for machines from the second half of the war. FineMolds is a Japanese maker whose accessories are among the most accurate on the market on this subject.
On aircraft models the cockpit is the first thing a viewer looks at, and the seat belts are the most prominent non-structural element in it. An injection kit either does not include them at all or has them suggested as relief on the seat, which looks flat. Photo-etched sheet, by contrast, is genuinely thin, can be convincingly bent and draped over the edge of the seat, so the belts look loosely laid just as they really were. In 1:48 scale the detail shows up markedly under an open canopy.
Cut the parts from the fret with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface rather than with nippers, which would bend the metal. Sand the remains of the tab with a fine file. So that the belts take their bends well, you can anneal the photo-etched sheet briefly over a flame and let it cool; the metal softens and stops springing back. Bend over a metal edge or in a bender, and shaping the ends works best with tweezers. They are glued with cyanoacrylate, or with a two-part glue that allows time for positioning. Degrease the metal before painting and lay on a primer for metal, otherwise the paint comes off during handling. Paint the belts in the shade of the webbing, pick the hardware out in a metal tone and bring the whole out with a fine wash in the recesses.
This is a detailing set, not a model in its own right. Paints, glues and the base kit are not included in the package.
