A photo-etched set of metal sheet from the Czech brand Eduard, intended to replace the landing flaps on a model of the Ilyushin Il-2 ground-attack aircraft in 1:48. The package contains etched parts, not a kit of the aircraft; that has to be bought separately. The particular number and breakdown of the parts are given in the instructions enclosed with the set.
Flaps molded from plastic always have a certain thickness that the technology in question cannot reduce. On the real aircraft, however, they are a thin sheet-metal structure with visible ribs and lightening holes. Etched metal imitates both the thin wall and the internal structure faithfully, so a model with the flaps lowered looks considerably more convincing, especially seen from behind and from below.
The Il-2 was a single-engine ground-attack aircraft with an armored forward fuselage that protected the engine, the radiators and the crew. It was built in single-seat and two-seat forms and was among the most numerously produced aircraft of its day. The structure of the wing changed over the course of production, which is reflected in the shape of the flaps as well, so always compare the set with your own kit.
Cut the parts off with a scalpel or sharp photo-etch scissors on a hard surface and sand the remains of the tabs back. The flaps call for accurate folds, so a bending tool, or at least two straight jaws and a steel rule, pays off. Cut the plastic flaps from the kit off and clean the opening up, and only then dry-fit the etched parts. Bond with cyanoacrylate glue drop by drop, degrease the metal before painting and spray a primer first, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface.
This is an accessory for a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
