About product

Kawasaki Ki-61-Id Hien 1:48 - an HGW masking set

Pre-cut masks from the Czech manufacturer HGW for a model of the Japanese Ki-61-Id Hien fighter in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit or parts of a model: the package contains only self-adhesive masks, which replace the lengthy cutting of tape and measuring of glazing frames. The masks are cut to the particular shape of the parts, so expect them to fit a particular mold of the model; the list of parts covered is given in the instructions enclosed with the set. Clean canopy frames are among the details that decide most about the impression a model makes, because a crooked or bled edge shows at first glance.

The real subject

The Ki-61 Hien was a Japanese single-engine fighter from Kawasaki, known to the Allies under the code name Tony. It differed from most Japanese fighters of the time in its liquid-cooled V engine, thanks to which it had a slender fuselage and an aerodynamically clean nose. The Ki-61-I Tei version, commonly written as Ki-61-Id, was a late production form with a lengthened fuselage and heavier cannon armament in the nose. The shape of the canopy and the division of the glazing differ between the individual versions, so masks cannot be swapped freely from one version to another.

Use and tips

First wash the clear parts in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent and let them dry in the air, because grease from your fingers is the most common reason a mask does not hold. Transfer the individual masks with tweezers or the tip of a scalpel, seat them dry and press the edges down with a blunt tool. First spray the interior shade, then the primer and only at the end the top camouflage shade; any bleed will then not show at the edge. Apply the paint in several light coats, because one heavy coat leaves a step at the edge of the mask. Remove the masks shortly after the paint has flashed off, pulling them back over themselves at a sharp angle.

Who the set is for

  • For builders of the Ki-61 model in 1:48 scale who want sharp and even canopy frames.
  • For modelers who do not want to cut masks out of tape by hand.
  • For beginners who are only starting out with spraying glazing, since the set removes the hardest part of the work.
  • For competition builds, where the cleanness of the edges is judged.

The package contains masks only. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is an accessory, a set of masks. You have to obtain the model itself separately.

The list of parts covered is in the instructions enclosed with the set.

The masks are cut to a particular shape of part. Before ordering we recommend comparing the shape of the canopy on your model, because with a different mold the masks need not line up.

Shortly after the paint has flashed off, not after it has fully cured. Pull them back over themselves at a sharp angle so that the edge stays clean.
