A conversion set from the Czech manufacturer AML in 1:48 scale. This is not a stand-alone model: the resin parts turn a standard kit of the single-seat Lavochkin La-5 into the two-seat UTI trainer version. It is a more substantial job on the kit, as the fuselage gains a second cockpit with matching glazing, so the finished model differs from the original fighter at first glance.
The Lavochkin La-5 was a Soviet fighter with a radial engine that from 1942 onwards gradually evened out the fighting on the Eastern Front. To convert pilots onto the powerful type, the two-seat UTI La-5 trainer version was created, in which the instructor sat in a second cockpit behind the pupil and the armament and equipment were simplified. Two-seat trainer versions of combat types are a rarity in display cases, even though they mattered a great deal for pilot training.
The most demanding step is opening the fuselage for the second cockpit: mark out the cut in advance, saw with a razor saw in shorter stretches and true the edges up with a file. Try the resin parts dry, glue them with cyanoacrylate glue, and the gap around the inserted cockpit deserves filler and sanding. On a trainer aircraft a worn, hard-worked surface looks convincing.
