This masking set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard is intended for a model of the two-seat Starfighter in 1:48. It contains pre-cut self-adhesive stencils of kabuki tape that are stuck onto the glazing and the other surfaces meant to stay clean after spraying. It is not a model of the aircraft; it is a consumable aid that a modeler buys to go with a kit, so as not to have to paint the cockpit frames with a brush.
The Starfighter was a single-engine supersonic aircraft characterized by very short straight wings and a slender fuselage. The version designated DJ was the two-seat trainer variant delivered to the Japan Air Self-Defense Force; compared with the single-seat version it has a lengthened cockpit with two seats in tandem, which also means markedly differently divided glazing.
Kabuki tape is a thin Japanese masking tape with a light adhesive film. It has three practical advantages over liquid masks: it gives a crisp straight edge even along a long straight frame, it does not shrink as it dries and it leaves no residue when removed. A liquid mask, by contrast, fills complex recesses better, so in practice the two complement each other. On a fighter cockpit, where it is mainly long straight frames that matter, cut tape is both faster and more accurate.
Lift the stencil off with tweezers, lay it down dry and only then press it to the edge of the engraving with a toothpick. Spray the shade of the frame that is meant to be on the inside first, and only then the camouflage. Apply the paint in several thin coats; a heavy coat creeps under the edge. Remove the mask as soon as the paint has set.
The package contains masking stencils only. The kit, paints and glue are not part of it.
