The SPACE range from the Czech maker Eduard is a modern way of getting a high level of detail into a model without demanding work with tiny photo-etched parts. Instead of flat decals, decals with real thickness and raised relief are printed, so the instrument panel and the side consoles of the cockpit come across as three-dimensional even once dry. This set is prepared for a model of the Lockheed P-38H in 1:48 scale and serves as an accessory, not as a model in its own right.

The real subject

The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was an American twin-engine fighter with a characteristic twin-boom layout and a central nacelle for the pilot. The P-38H version followed on from the earlier series with changes to the powerplants and the cooling. The cockpit on this subject was fairly complex, and that is exactly why detailing the interior pays off visually on a model — especially when you build with the canopy open.

Usage tips

Spray the base under the elements first and let it dry thoroughly; a smooth surface makes seating easier. Cut the individual elements out close to the edge, but do not immerse them in water: wet only the carrier paper with a damp sponge and a drop of dish soap. Lift the freed element off with tweezers, transfer it into place and fix it with white dispersion glue; the manufacturer does not recommend superglue. Do not use decal softener or fixative, as their chemistry damages the printed resin and ruins the raised element. A matte overcoat at the end comes in handy to even the surface of the cockpit out.
