Dornier Do 17Z-10 1:48 mask set, the BASIC level (New Ware)

Self-adhesive cut New Ware masks for the model of the night fighter Dornier Do 17Z-10 in 1:48 scale. The BASIC level is the basic step of the range and deals with what holds the build up most: the frames of the glazed forward section and the landing gear wheels. The masks are cut from thin masking tape, they hold firmly enough even on curved surfaces and after spraying they come off without adhesive residue. The masks are cut for the ICM 48243 kit.

The glazed nose as the main problem of the build

The Dornier has its glazing laid out as a many-sided cockpit made up of dozens of small panes. Cutting that many frames from tape by hand is lengthy and above all unreliable, because one frame only has to be a shade wider and the lack of symmetry shows on the model at once. A machine-cut mask has every pane accurate and alike, so the finished cockpit reads as a grid and not as a set of strips of differing width.

The real subject

The Do 17Z-10 is the night fighter form of the twin-engine Dornier Do 17 of the period of the Second World War. Compared with the bomber version it has a modified nose with fixed armament. Only a small number of machines was built, so it is a marginal but technically interesting branch in the development of the type.

Procedure

• Wash the glazing with lukewarm water and detergent, as a mask holds less well on grease from fingers
• Work through the panes systematically, so that no frame is left out
• Press the mask down with a wooden toothpick, above all in the corners of the individual panes
• Lay the paint on in several light coats, as a heavy coat runs under the edge
• Take the mask off soon after the paint has set, pulling it back at an angle
