About product

Eduard 1:48 Spitfire Mk.I exhaust stacks — resin exhausts

This set from the Czech maker Eduard is not an aircraft kit but a replacement part in 1:48 scale. On a Spitfire model the exhausts are a prominent feature right next to the engine cowling, and the plastic part from the mold usually has solid, that is blind, outlets. The resin casting has them drilled out, so the stacks look like real pipework rather than a suggested shape.

What the set offers

The casting carries fine detail of the individual stacks, flanges and joints. Open outlets change the impression of the whole engine area completely, because that is where the eye falls first. Resin also holds a thinner stack wall than can be drawn from a conventional mold.

The real subject

The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I was a British fighter introduced in 1938 and famous from the Battle of Britain. It was powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 engine, whose cylinders vented into short exhaust stacks on both sides of the engine cowling. In service a characteristic dark exhaust stain formed around them, trailing back along the fuselage.

Usage and painting tips

Cut the parts off carefully with a fine-toothed saw, sand the surface down and wash the casting in lukewarm water with dish soap. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue), ideally only after the cowling has been painted, so that the exhausts do not have to be masked. Apply a primer before painting. Exhausts look best over a dark rust base, building up in layers of dry pigment from rust orange to soot. Darken the outlets and add a fine exhaust stain along the fuselage, which is best sprayed with heavily thinned paint in thin coats.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I models in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers bothered by the blind outlets of plastic exhausts
  • Anyone after realistic weathering of the engine area
  • Those who want a striking detail for very little work

This is an accessory for building the model, not a standalone kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Plastic parts usually have solid outlets and thicker walls. The resin stacks have the openings drilled and a thinner wall, so they read as real pipework.

Only after the cowling has been painted and clear-coated. That saves masking them, and the exhaust weathering can be done last.

Start with a dark rust base and then build up in layers of dry pigment from rust orange to soot. Darken the outlets and add a thin exhaust stain.

No. The set deals with the exhaust stacks; the cowling stays as it came in the original model.
