Scribing is a discipline in which the guiding of the tool decides everything. Against a plastic one, a metal handle has more weight and better balance, so the tip holds the line by itself and the modeler does not have to press it into the surface — and pressure is the commonest reason a scriber runs off the line. The knurled surface improves the grip even during longer work and allows fine rotation between the fingers while scribing. Hold the tool square, draw it toward you in several light strokes and set the line out in advance with tape or a flexible ruler. Remove the dust from the groove with a brush, or it will clog the tip and the line will widen.
For modelers who already use scribers and want one good handle for a whole set of tips. The black version is the quiet, unobtrusive choice for anyone not concerned with telling tools apart by color on the bench.
The tool itself has no blade, but the tips it holds are very sharp. Put them away covered, work away from your body and keep the tool out of the reach of children.
