The New Ware 1:48 P-51D-5NA Mustang BASIC mask set is the basic grade of masking for the model of this version of the Mustang. The cut self-adhesive masks fit the shape of the curved canopy without folding any tape.

The Mustang in the D version is one of the most frequently built aircraft of all, and its bubble canopy is at the same time the shape on which masking by hand fails most often. The basic grade of the set from the manufacturer New Ware offers self-adhesive parts cut directly to that geometry. It is an aid for painting, not a part of the model.
A spherical shape cannot be wrapped with a straight strip of tape without the tape rippling at the sides. A modeler deals with it by cutting the tape into teeth, and the resulting edge is then never smooth. A mask cut on a plotter has an outline that follows the curvature without folds once applied, because it is cut to a developed flat pattern. The frame therefore looks the same thickness on top and at the sides, and the clear glass stays genuinely clear.
Apply the curved parts from the center to the edges and stretch the material slightly, which makes the mask conform to the shape. Do not work in the cold, as a warmer mask is more pliable. Go over the edges with a wooden stick twice; on a curve they are the most prone to creep. Lay the paint on thinly and take the mask off as soon as the surface stops being tacky. If a small imperfection appears under the edge, put it right with the tip of a brush at the very end, when the rest of the surface is finished.
The package holds only the mask set. A kit, paints and glue are not part of it.
