A simple way to raise the result

A mask set is one of the simplest accessories there is, and yet it shows on the finished model more than most elaborate upgrades. A badly finished canopy spoils even an otherwise well-built model, because the eye goes straight to it when you look at an aircraft. Half an hour with tape and a knife is replaced by a few minutes with a pre-cut mask, and with a predictable result at that.

The real subject

The J-11B is the Chinese developed version of a fighter based on the Su-27 design. Against the original type it has domestic avionics and revised equipment. It serves with the People's Liberation Army Air Force as a single-seat fighter.

How to work with the masks

• Leave the clear parts in their bag until you mask them so that they do not get scratched.
• Degrease and dry the surface before placing a mask.
• Lay the mask on centered and work it out from the middle to the edges with a toothpick.
• Apply the paint in thin coats with a pause between them, or a ridge will build up along the edge.
• Keep the rest of the sheet; it comes in handy for masking small details on your next build.
