This set from the manufacturer SX-Art holds self-adhesive stencils for spraying the color scheme on a model of the MiG-25 in 1:48 scale. The stencils are applied to an already painted surface and the airbrush sprays only into the defined shapes. These are not masks that go onto the canopy glazing. The set is cut for the ICM kit.
The MiG-25 is a twin-engine supersonic aircraft with a high-mounted wing, twin fins and angular side air intakes. Its structure used steel to a large extent in the load-bearing parts, because the airframe heats up strongly at high speeds. It existed in both interceptor and reconnaissance form and was one of the fastest series-built aircraft of its day.
On modern combat aircraft both kinds of transition are used and the difference is visible at first glance. You get a sharp edge by pressing the stencil down perfectly around its perimeter and spraying perpendicular, in thin coats. A soft, blurred transition appears when you lift the edge of the stencil by one to three tenths of a millimeter — a thin strip of masking tape under it is enough — and spray from a greater distance at lower pressure. Choose one option and keep to it over the whole model, because mixing sharp and soft edges looks careless. Apply the shades from light to dark and let the paint really dry between coats, otherwise it will be pulled off when the next stencil is applied. Remove the stencils once the paint has set, slowly and at an angle back over themselves.
