A set of pre-cut painting masks from the brand Reskit for a model of the Mikoyan MiG-25BM aircraft in 1:48 scale. It is neither a kit nor decals: the masks are stuck onto the model before spraying and taken off once it is painted, so the frame of the canopy, the glazing and other sharp transitions come out precisely and without laborious cutting of tape. On a large aircraft with extensive glazing in particular, the set saves a lot of time and does away with the most frequent source of frustration, namely an uneven edge of a cockpit frame. The masks are cut to the particular shape of the parts, so check before buying that they match the kit you have.
The MiG-25 was a high-speed machine with two engines, a welded structure mostly of steel and characteristic side air intakes with sharp edges. The BM version came about as a modification for the suppression of ground radar systems and carried the corresponding equipment and armament; its identifying mark is a different solution of the nose compared with the reconnaissance and fighter versions. Because of its large dimensions, a model in 1:48 scale is among the more sizeable pieces in a cabinet and its glazing has a lot of frames, which is precisely why a masking set pays off.
Degrease the surface before sticking the masks on and let the previous coat of paint cure perfectly, otherwise it may be torn off when they are peeled away. Transfer a mask with tweezers, settle it dry and press it down with a toothpick all the way round: a well pressed edge is the only safeguard against paint creeping underneath. Spray in thin coats and rather from the edge of the mask inward. Peel them off slowly and at a sharp angle, ideally while the paint is not yet fully hard. Any adhesive residue can be removed with a cotton swab lightly moistened with spirit, but always try that in a hidden place first.
The masks are an aid for painting. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
