An accessory set from L Decals Studio: two R-73 air-to-air missiles in 1:48 scale together with a sheet of small technical lettering. It is not a kit of an aircraft but underwing ordnance intended to be swapped for the coarser stores from the box. The stores are often the weakest point of older tooling, so the exchange is noticeable at first glance on a finished model.
The R-73, under the NATO reporting name AA-11 Archer, is a Soviet short-range air-to-air missile with infrared guidance, introduced in the 1980s as the successor to earlier types. It is marked by high agility, given both by aerodynamic control and by thrust vectoring, and by the ability to lock onto a target off the flight axis, which in combination with a helmet-mounted sight considerably widened the options in maneuvering combat. It became the standard armament of the MiG-29 and of the Sukhoi series of machines and spread to many foreign users.
Wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water so that mold release residue does not prevent the paint from adhering. Cut the casting stubs off with a saw or a photo-etched saw; the thin forward control fins are fragile, so do not use cutters on them. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Apply a gloss clear coat before laying down the small lettering and use a decal softener, otherwise the small decals will silver. The white and light gray training rendering is worth laying over a primer, so that the shade does not look uneven.
The package holds two missiles and a sheet of lettering. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
