The masking set for the running gear of the Sd.Kfz. 251 half-track carrier in 1:48 scale covers two different situations, at the front and at the rear: the tire of the steered wheel and the tire bands of the tracked running gear. The set is cut for the Tamiya kits.

The set serves for masking while painting; it is not a kit or replacement parts. Its shape follows particular parts, which is why it is listed for the Tamiya kits and cannot be relied on for a kit from another manufacturer.
In masking terms a half-track carrier is two different tasks in one vehicle. At the front is a classic steered axle with tires that are not driven and merely set the direction, so here you deal with the border between rubber and rim as on a cargo truck. At the rear, by contrast, runs a tracked running gear with wheel tire bands that overlap one another, so the individual discs seat over each other and when painting you have to work in layers from the inner wheels outwards. Side armor and a fender are added to that, covering part of the running gear: what is visible has to be clean, and what is not visible is not worth laboriously painting in. It is precisely the combination of a tire at the front and overlapping wheels at the rear that makes this one of the vehicles where pre-cut masks pay off most.
Lay out the order in advance. Leave the front wheels separate and fit them only once they are painted; with the rear running gear, by contrast, consider whether to paint the wheels on their stubs and leave the tracks for last. Before the work itself, compare the masks with the parts on the sprue, wash the wheels in lukewarm water with dish soap and let them dry out properly, so no greasy film is left on the surface. A thin coat of primer is especially useful on overlapping wheels, because the paint settles on it evenly even in the narrow gaps an airbrush reaches only at a slant. Press the masks down all the way around, especially where two discs touch, and spray in thin coats.
The package contains masks only. The kit, paints and glue are not part of it, unless stated otherwise.
