The sheet holds waterslide decals for a model of the Freedom Fighter in 1:48 scale in the colors of the Royal Thai Air Force. A kit is not part of it — the decals serve to finish a model you obtain separately. The set relates to the early period of the type's operation and to the single-seat and two-seat versions alike.
The F-5A Freedom Fighter came about as a light supersonic fighter intended above all for export. The design relied on simplicity, low weight and easy maintenance: two small General Electric J85 engines with afterburners, a slender wing and undemanding equipment. Thanks to that, even air forces with a limited budget and service facilities could afford the type. The two-seat F-5B version has a lengthened fuselage and two seats one behind the other, and it served for training and for combat duties. In the mid-1960s the machines began heading for the first foreign users, and in the early period they carried simpler finishes than the later camouflage schemes.
On early schemes the main role is played by large national insignia and contrasting bands, so it pays to give them time. First lay the decals on the model dry and check the dimensions against the panel lines. Spray the area with gloss clear and let it cure fully. Soak the decal briefly in lukewarm water, carry it over to the model together with the backing and slide it out so that the decal cannot be torn. A damp decal is easy to work with, but once it starts to dry on, moving it will ruin it. Draw the excess water off with a towel laid against the side, not by pressure from above. The fin surface and the fuselage transition tend to be the most demanding places on this type; there a decal softener in two thin coats will help.
