On 8 September 1939, a week after the war broke out, a French fighter group flying this American type reported shooting down a German machine. It was the very first confirmed success of Allied aviation on the Western Front and it was scored by an aircraft France had bought out of necessity, because home production could not keep up.
In May and June 1940 this type was distinctly slower and less well armed than its main German opponent. It did, however, have excellent handling at low speeds, obedient behavior on the edge of a stall and an exceptionally strong all-metal airframe. French pilots therefore fought in the horizontal plane, into which they forced the enemy with a turn, and achieved disproportionately good results with it. Per aircraft committed, the groups flying this machine scored a greater share of victories than units with more modern home-built types.
The cockpit has a small but busy frame, and cutting tape by hand for it is needlessly nerve-racking work. Pre-cut film removes the problem: it is applied, sprayed and lifted off. The inner masking gives the frames color when you look into the pilot's space too, and the insignia masks replace applied marking with spraying, which leaves no glossy edge on a matte surface.
