The masking set for the road wheels of the Panther Ausf.G tank and the Jagdpanther tank destroyer in 1:48 scale is cut for the kits from Tamiya.
Responsibility details are not available.
Pre-cut masks for painting the running gear of the Panther in the Ausf.G version and of the Jagdpanther tank destroyer derived from it. They cover the rubber tire bands of the wheels, so the rim and the rubber are separated by spraying. The set is cut for the kits of these vehicles from Tamiya, which share the same chassis.
The Panther has an interleaved running gear, called staggered: the large wheels are arranged on each side in two mutually overlapping rows, so the outer wheels cover a substantial part of the inner ones. Return rollers are missing; the track runs over the upper edge of the wheels. For the modeler that means an entirely different routine from the Pz.Kpfw.IV or the Sherman: once the wheels are on their axles, you can reach the inner row with neither a mask nor a brush. The second thing worth checking is the type of wheel — late Panthers were given steel wheels with internal springing, on which no rubber tire band is painted at all.
There is only one answer, and it is at the same time the most important advice about the whole set: mask, paint and unmask the wheels as separate parts, while they are still loose. It works well to spike them on a skewer or a toothpick pushed into polystyrene; around a wheel held that way you can spray from every side and the mask comes off with no risk of catching on anything. Then assemble the set of interleaved wheels in order from the inner row outwards and only at the end slip the track on. If the wheels are already glued on and the tire band border is missing somewhere, the rest can be leveled with a very fine brush through the outer gap, but it is a job for the patient.
Paints, glue and the kit are not included in the package.
