Underwing armament tends to be the last unfinished area on aircraft models: the out-of-the-box parts have a parting line across the whole body and simplified guidance gear. This resin set from the Czech firm Eduard offers castings with no lengthwise seam, with a defined surface and fine detail on the guidance and stabilizing sections. This particular item covers a laser-guided bomb based on an Mk 83 body in a version for higher speeds and with a thermally protective coating.
Paveway I was the first generation of American laser-guided bombs. It was a guidance kit with which a standard unguided bomb body was completed: a seeker head for reflected laser energy was fitted at the front and stabilizing and control surfaces at the rear. The basis of this variant is a body of the Mk 83 class weighing approximately 450 kilograms. The designation for higher speeds corresponds to an aerodynamically revised form, and the thermally protective coating is used on naval munitions for safety in the event of a fire on the deck of an aircraft carrier. Weapons of this type appeared in the 1960s and fundamentally increased the accuracy of strikes against point targets.
First wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water, otherwise the paint will not hold. The casting block tends to be on the flat end or on the edge of the stabilizing surfaces: cut it off with a saw and level the surface on sanding paper laid on glass, so that it stays flat. The fine surfaces are fragile, so handle them only once the glue has cured. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue. Painting: primer, then the base shade, crisp colored stripes using masks and finally a fine wash into the engraved lines. Complete the store only at the very end, so that it does not break off during the build.
