A photo-etched detail set from the Polish maker Aber in 1:48 scale for the Soviet KV-1 and KV-2 heavy tanks in the early form, which was marked out by wide fenders. It is not a kit but an accessory to a plastic model, which you have to own separately. The metal parts replace fittings that injection-molded plastic cannot cast at a matching thickness – typically sheet covers, brackets and small external gear.
The KV-1 and KV-2 were Soviet heavy tanks in action from 1940. The KV-1 carried a 76.2 mm gun, while the bulkier KV-2 had an enormous slab-sided turret with a 152 mm howitzer meant for destroying fortifications. Both types shared the same chassis and a range of hull fittings, so accessories often overlap. Early examples had wide fenders, which suffered in the field and not infrequently went missing altogether. In the summer fighting of 1941 the heavily armored KVs were able to stand up to the German anti-tank weapons of the time.
Separate the parts with a scalpel on a hard mat, handle them with tweezers and run the bends in a photo-etch bending tool. Glue them with cyanoacrylate glue in the smallest possible amount. On wide fenders it pays to render the reality of service – a bend, a tear, missing sections. Degrease the metal before painting and apply a primer for metal. Soviet vehicles are painted in green shades, and the weathering builds on a wash into the gaps and on dusty or muddy pigments on the running gear.
This is a detail accessory, not a standalone model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
