1:48 Russian missile R-27ER AA-10 Alamo-C

The R-27ER missile (AA-10 Alamo-C) — a resin accessory 1:48

This accessory set from the Czech manufacturer Plus Model contains a resin replica of the Soviet R-27ER air-to-air guided missile in 1:48 scale. Note that it is not a kit of an aircraft; the set serves to arm a model of a fighter and as a striking detail for a display case or a diorama.

The real subject

The R-27ER (AA-10 Alamo-C in the NATO reporting system) is the version of the R-27 missile with extended range, developed by the Vympel design bureau. It can be told from the basic R-27R at first glance: a more powerful rocket motor gave it a noticeably wider and longer rear body. It homes semi-actively by radar, as the target is illuminated for the duration of the flight of the missile by the radar of the carrier aircraft. It was precisely the long-range ER and ET versions that formed the heavier part of the armament of the Su-27 and MiG-29 fighters, where they complemented the agile short-range missiles.

Building and painting tips

Wash the castings free of the remains of the mold release agent, cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a sharp knife and glue them with cyanoacrylate glue. The slender body of the missile is rewarding to paint; complete a light gray-white base according to period photographs with a fine wash and, if you like, contrasting details of the sensors and the nozzle. The replica will come out beautifully on a pylon under a wing as well as laid on an armament trolley in a diorama.
