A resin miniature of the Soviet R-40TD guided missile (NATO code AA-6 Acrid) in 1:48 scale from the Czech manufacturer Plusmodel. An accessory of aircraft armament, not a model of an aircraft, representing the modernized heat-guided form of the legendary giant missile of Soviet interceptors.
The R-40 family of missiles accompanied the MiG-25 interceptor throughout its career. While the original R-40T of the 1960s carried a first generation infrared seeker head, the modernized R-40TD received improved heat homing and kept this massive weapon combat capable in later years as well; modernized versions appeared on the stores stations of late MiG-25 aircraft and of other interceptors. Infrared homing is passive: the missile homes on the heat emission of the target itself and after launch needs no further support from the carrier. On the aircraft the heat and radar versions were as a rule combined.
Wash the resin parts free of the remains of the mold release agent, remove the casting blocks with a saw and sand the surfaces; use a respirator while sanding. Glue with cyanoacrylate and prime. Treat the rounded head with its sensor in gloss black; complete the body in light gray with discreet stencil markings and fine emphasis of the joints, as the massive surface of the missile carries detailed weathering well.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
