A flexible silicone mold with a roof tile relief. It is an aid, not a finished accessory: on its own it does not belong in a diorama, it serves so that you can cast the roofs yourself, repeatedly and in any quantity. The relief is made for 1:48, that is for figures around 30 mm tall; in that ratio the size of the individual tiles and their overlap are right. The silicone is flexible, so the casting comes out without breaking even where the relief has undercut edges. The dimensions of the mold and the number of motifs on it are given on the packaging.

Use

• The mold can be filled with two-part modeling putty, plaster, air-drying clay or casting resin; each material gives a different hardness and sands differently.
• With two-part putties it is usually enough to dampen the mold lightly or rub it with petroleum jelly so that the putty does not stick; with resins use a release agent according to its instructions.
• Press the material into the relief with a roller or with your fingers and draw the surplus off with a straight edge; a thinner casting then bends more easily to the shape of the roof.
• Take the casting out only after it has cured completely, otherwise the relief will smear.
• Wash the mold in lukewarm water with detergent after use and let it dry in the air; do not expose it to solvents or to high temperatures.
• Paint the cast roof as you would ceramic: a dark undercoat, a pass with a lighter shade over the edges and finally pigments into the gaps.

Who the mold is for

For builders of dioramas and vignettes in 1:48 and for players who build terrain for figures around 30 mm tall. It is worth having wherever you need a larger roof area or several buildings at once, because one mold yields as many castings as you need. It is also useful for repairs and for filling in damaged roofs on finished buildings, when you need only a few tiles in the right pattern.

The mold is not a toy; keep it out of the reach of children. When working with casting resin and plaster, follow the instructions from the maker of that material, wear gloves and ventilate.
