About product

Spitfire - type E wing armament in 1:48 scale (CMK, resin)

Castings in modeling resin from the maker CMK serve to rebuild the wing armament on a plastic Spitfire kit in 1:48 scale. There is no plastic part of the aircraft in the package; it is a detail accessory bought in addition to a kit.

How the type E wing differs

The late armament standard designated as type E is told from the older arrangement above all by the weapons being moved on the wing and by a different pair of calibers: a heavier cannon is supplemented by a large-caliber machine gun instead of the small machine guns in the outer sections. The change is visible in the position of the barrel ports relative to the leading edge, in a different shape of the bulges over the breeches and in the absence of holes where the outermost weapons used to sit. For a builder it is a detail that has to agree with the chosen finish, as a model with late armament and early markings is an inconsistency that collectors notice.

Preparing the plastic before fitting

First remove the original molded barrels and covers from the wing. A fine saw for plastic suits, and on small bulges rather a sharp scalpel held flat. Sand the resulting surface flat and check against the light whether any bump is left. Then comes the dry test: lay the resin parts on without glue and watch whether the barrels point parallel to the axis of the aircraft and whether the recessing of the covers sits right. Wash the castings free of the release agent beforehand, cut the casting blocks off with a saw a little way from the part and sand the remainder down. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue; when sanding, protect your airways or sand wet.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of late versions of the Spitfire who want the right weapon fit
  • Modelers bothered on plastic by soft covers and blind barrel ports
  • More advanced builders used to cutting and sanding resin

The set is an accessory for a plastic kit. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The weapon fit and the position of the weapons on the wing differ, and with them the shape of the covers and bulges. The set renders this late form in resin castings.

Yes. It is an accessory for a plastic Spitfire model in 1:48 scale; the aircraft itself is not in the package.

It requires cutting off the original plastic weapons, sanding the surface and fitting the part after a dry test. For a modeler with experience of resin it is an evening's work.

They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue and painted after washing and spraying on a base color; without primer acrylic holds less well on resin.
