About product

Spitfire Mk.I - control surfaces in 1:48 scale (CMK, resin)

The resin set from the maker CMK supplies the control surfaces of the Spitfire Mk.I in 1:48 scale as separate parts. This product is cut for the Tamiya kit; the maker CMK also issues the same set in a version for the Airfix model and the parts are not interchangeable between them, so when choosing, verify which kit you are building. In the package there is an accessory, not a model of the aircraft.

What the set solves

Early Spitfires had their rudder and ailerons with a fabric covering, whose ribbing and slight sag between the ribs is visible in 1:48 scale. An injection-molded kit casts these surfaces in one piece with the wing or the tail and in the neutral position; the resin castings separate them, so you can deflect them, and at the same time they offer a more pronounced surface and a thinner trailing edge. Deflected controls are moreover a simple way of bringing a display case model to life, since on a parked aircraft the surfaces are free and rarely stand exactly in line.

Preparing the plastic before fitting

The work starts with a cut. Cut the original surfaces off the plastic parts with a fine saw run along the hinge line; with the elevators it is advisable to divide both halves by the same procedure, so that they are the same length. Then level the edge with abrasive paper on a flat board and keep checking against the light. Do the dry test on the assembled wing and tail, as only with the whole will you see whether the deflection is symmetrical and whether the gap gapes anywhere. Wash the resin parts in warm water with detergent beforehand, cut the casting blocks off leaving a margin and sand them down. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue; sand wet or with respiratory protection.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the early Spitfire who want deflected controls
  • Modelers bothered by the thick trailing edge of injected parts
  • More experienced builders willing to cut into the parts of a kit

The set is an accessory for a plastic kit. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

For the Spitfire Mk.I model from Tamiya in 1:48 scale. The same set also exists in a version for the Airfix kit, and the parts are not interchangeable.

You get the rudder, ailerons and flaps as separate resin parts, so you can deflect them and you get a finer surface of the covering.

Medium. The original surfaces are cut off with a saw, the edge is leveled on abrasive paper and the part is fitted after a dry test.

Cyanoacrylate glue. Cement for polystyrene will not bond resin, because it does not dissolve it.
