A resin engine set for the Spitfire Mk.Vb in 1:48 scale makes it possible to build the model with the front of the fuselage exposed. It is an accessory for a kit; the aircraft itself is not in the package.

The set in modeling resin from the maker CMK completes the powerplant and the engine compartment of the Spitfire Mk.Vb in 1:48 scale. It is used where you want to build the model with the cowling panels removed and show what is under them. You have to have the kit of the aircraft separately; the set does not replace it.
The Spitfire in the Mk.Vb version was powered by a liquid-cooled Rolls-Royce Merlin V12. The front of the fuselage is therefore formed by an engine mount of tubes on which the engine hangs, around it run the cooling and oil plumbing, the exhaust manifolds emerge along the sides of the cowling and a tank sits above the engine. It is precisely this concentration of mechanical detail that makes an exposed engine section a rewarding theme, as on a closed model only the exhaust is visible of the whole block.
The most demanding step is separating the cowling. The panels you want to remove are cut off the plastic fuselage with a fine saw or by scoring with a scalpel and bending repeatedly; run the cut along the engraved lines of the real panels, because those are the logical boundary on the model. Then thin the edges from the inside with a file, as a thick plastic wall betrays the scale more than anything else. Next comes the dry test: put the engine into the fuselage without glue and check the height of the mounting, the angle and whether the cover on the removed panel will still seat. Wash the castings free of the release agent, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and sand wet or in a respirator. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, and the engine is painted and shaded before it is seated in place.
The set is an accessory for a plastic kit. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
