A set of painting masks for the Spitfire Mk V in the equipment of the Polish squadrons of the Royal Air Force. The contents are an outer glazing stencil and two sheets with circular insignia.
Responsibility details are not available.
When offensive sorties over occupied France got under way in 1941, whole units made up of pilots who had come through Romania and France flew in their formations. The Mk V became their main working tool: a pair of cannon in the wing, a rate of climb that stood comparison, and a weakness in the form of poorer performance at high altitude against the German fighter of the day. These machines survive in dozens of photographs and their markings are still one of the most sought-after subjects.
Inside lies one glazing stencil cut for the outer surface and two sheets with circular insignia. The vinyl is matte, it can be lifted and laid down again, so aligning it to the frame does not have to work out first time.
A circular insignia comes out excellently at this size, because its diameter stays in the order of single millimeters and the vinyl holds the concentric rings without trouble. Small personal marking artwork on the fuselage, a unit badge or inscriptions under the cockpit, by contrast, will no longer fit into die-cut film; for those there remains either a decal or a very patient brush. In 1:48 the markings thus divide into two halves: the large shapes are sprayed, the small details applied. Anyone wanting to spray the small details too has to move to 1:32, where the area of the insignia grows roughly twofold.
