A set of masks and decals for the most numerous version of the Spitfire, the Mark Vb in 1:48. The glazing is masked from both sides, with a double set of national marking to go with it.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Mark V came about simply: the Merlin 45 engine was put into the airframe of the previous version and the result was the most numerously built form of the whole type. The b wing carried two Hispano cannons and four machine guns, so at last it had something to punch through the armor of bombers with. It flew over the Channel, over Malta and in the desert with a special filter under the nose, and in 1942 it formed the backbone of the British fighter arm, even though the Focke-Wulf was beginning to outclass it.
Decals usually come with the kit, but they call for a gloss coat, a softener and finally a matte overcoat. A mask drops those three steps and gives the saved time back. The difference lies mainly in where the work is spent: with film at the beginning, while laying the pieces down, and with print at the end, while getting rid of silvering.
Anyone building a desert machine should watch the order: the sand coat on the upper surfaces comes before the insignia, otherwise a sharp transition will appear under the mask. The cut is based on the Airfix kit. The rest of the film comes in useful for covering the intake filter and the cannon barrels. It also works well as a temporary barrier against dust on the exhaust pipes for the rest of the build.
