This set from Metallic Details sharpens up the landing gear of the large SR-71 model in 1:48 scale. It holds resin parts for the nose and main gear, that is the legs, the wheels, the wheel well liners and the gear doors, complemented by photo-etched sheet. It is an aftermarket accessory for a plastic kit; the aircraft model is not included in the package. The photo-etched fret is prepared for the Testors and Italeri kits.
The SR-71 Blackbird is an American two-seat reconnaissance aircraft built for high supersonic flight at great altitude. Its titanium alloy structure, the leading edges running forward into the point of the nose and the two large engine nacelles with their movable cones gave it an unmistakable outline. On a machine this heavy and this fast the landing gear is sturdy: the main legs carry three wheels each and retract into roomy wells in the wing center section. On a model this is one of the most visible areas, because the aircraft stands high and the wells are easy to see once the doors are open.
Wash the resin castings in warm soapy water, cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutting disc and level the surfaces by wet sanding with respiratory protection. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue; on the load-bearing gear parts it is worth reinforcing the joint with a wire pin. Separate the photo-etched parts with a sharp knife on a hard surface. Paint the wells and the legs before the fuselage is closed, then bring the detail out with a dark wash and a dry brush. Fit the wheels right at the end so that they do not get dirty while you work.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
