About product

Sturmtiger in 1:48 scale: a CMK conversion set

The resin conversion replaces the superstructure of the base kit with a new enclosed one carrying the characteristic main weapon. It is an accessory, not a complete model: you need a plastic kit of the corresponding chassis for the conversion to sit on. In extent this set is among the largest CMK conversions in 1:48 scale.

The real subject

The Sturmtiger was a German self-propelled weapon built on the chassis of the Tiger I heavy tank. The conventional turret was replaced by a fixed armored casemate superstructure with a short large-caliber weapon meant for destroying fortified targets at short range. Very few vehicles of this type were built, and their silhouette is defined precisely by that massive boxy superstructure with a sloped front and a conspicuous weapon mouth.

When the conversion pays off and when it does not

Here the answer is clear: the conversion changes the whole upper half of the vehicle, that is the part everybody looks at first. The result is therefore not an upgraded tank but an entirely different piece of equipment with a silhouette of its own; measured by the ratio of work done to visible result, this is the most rewarding type of accessory. Count on it being the most demanding item of its kind, though: removing the original superstructure, fine-tuning the mating surface and working with large resin castings. For a modeler who has so far built only out of the box it is not a first choice.

Working with resin and with the conversion

Wash the large castings in lukewarm soapy water first. On massive parts cut the casting blocks off with a saw in stages, not in one go. Level the surface where the superstructure sits on the hull by wet sanding on a flat backing: this is where most of the gaps appear. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue; over a large area a slower variant with more time for alignment is worth considering. Sort out the running gear and the inside of the hull before you seat the superstructure.

Who the set is for

  • Experienced builders of military vehicles in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who want a less usual type of equipment in their collection
  • Diorama builders where the vehicle is the main motif

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. It is a conversion set: you need a plastic kit of the corresponding chassis for the superstructure to sit on.

It replaces the whole upper structure of the vehicle, so it contains a markedly larger volume of resin than sets that change only part of the equipment.

Probably not. You face removing the original superstructure, sanding the mating surface and working with large castings. We recommend it to more experienced modelers.

No. The conversion is cut for a particular kit, so check compatibility beforehand.
