Pre-cut New Ware kabuki masks for the model of the two-seat Su-30SM combat aircraft in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit and not parts of a model — the package holds self-adhesive masks only, which replace the slow cutting of tape and the measuring of glazing frames. Kabuki tape is thin, paper-based and pliable: it follows the rounded surfaces of the canopy well, holds on an edge and leaves no adhesive behind. The ADVANCED designation places the set in the middle standard of the maker's three-step range (BASIC, ADVANCED, EXPERT), which differ in the extent of the areas covered; the exact list of parts is given in the instructions in the package. The masks are cut to the specific shape of the parts, so expect them to match one particular tooling of the model.
The Su-30SM is a two-seat multirole combat aircraft derived from the Su-27 design family. It has a tandem cockpit for two crew, canards at the wing roots and a pair of engines with thrust vectoring. The canopy glazing is long, divided into several parts and bordered by prominent frames — on a model of this type, masking therefore takes considerably more time than on a single-seat fighter.
Wash the clear parts first in lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap and let them dry freely; grease from fingers is the most common reason a mask will not hold. Transfer the individual masks with tweezers or the tip of a scalpel, seat them dry and press the edges down with a blunt tool. Apply the paint in several light coats, because one heavy coat leaves a step at the edge of the mask. The order that pays off is the interior shade, then the primer and only then the top camouflage — any bleed stays hidden that way. Take the masks off shortly after the paint has flashed off, pulling them back over themselves at a sharp angle.
The package contains masks only. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
