Cut masks for building the Sukhoi Su-57 fighter in 1:48 scale. It is not an airplane model but an accessory for a plastic kit. The masks are stuck onto the areas that are meant to come out of spraying clean and are taken off once the paint has dried. The pre-cut shape matches the parts of the model, so you do not have to measure tape out and trim it with a scalpel on the canopy itself.
The Su-57 is a single-seat twin-engine multirole fighter of contemporary design, laid out with the emphasis on reduced observability. Characteristic are the smooth blending between the fuselage and the wing, the canted faces of the vertical tails and the internal carriage of weapons. For a modeler what matters above all is the large, barely divided canopy glazing with its pronounced lengthwise curve and the sizable landing gear bay doors.
On the Su-57 the glazing is unusually extensive and almost without transverse frames, so the edge of the mask runs along a long curve with nothing to brace against. That is where most of the trouble arises: the film stretches on the curve, lifts on the outside of the arc and paint bleeds under it. It helps to lay the mask down in sections, to press it progressively from the center out to the sides, and in the sharpest curve to warm it slightly with a hairdryer so that it remembers the shape. Before the shade itself, spray the edge with a thin coat of base paint or clear varnish, which closes the gap. The shades of modern aircraft tend to be flat and low in opacity, so lay them on patiently in thin coats, otherwise a visible step forms on the edge.
