Three sets of markings for the Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX of RAF squadrons of 1942 and 1943, including the machine of Aleksander Gabszewicz, scale 1:48.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Mk IX came about as a quick solution to the crisis caused in 1942 by the Focke-Wulf Fw 190. A two-stage supercharged Merlin 61 engine was built into the airframe of the Vb version, and the Spitfire thereby regained its advantage at altitude at a stroke. It can be recognized by a longer nose and a pair of exhaust rows with six openings. The sheet offers three machines from the very beginning of this version's service.
The first aircraft, with the serial EN527, carries the codes SZ-A, belonged to No. 316 Squadron RAF and captures August 1943. The second machine, NH214 with the codes SZ-G, is linked with Colonel Aleksander Gabszewicz of the same squadron and falls into the same month. The third variant, BS456 with the codes UZ-Z, comes from No. 306 Squadron RAF and is from the close of 1942, that is from the first months when the Mk IX was reaching the units. A pair of machines from one squadron moreover makes it possible to build the aircraft of a commander and the aircraft of an ordinary pilot side by side.
Take care over the choice of kit: early and late Mk IX machines differ in the shape of the nose, in the radiators and in the elevator, and the markings on this sheet belong to machines from the beginning of the version's deployment. A decal on its own will not settle that difference. Neither the model of the aircraft nor the paints are included in the package.
