About product

Tiger I road wheel masks in 1:48 scale

Pre-cut masks for painting the running gear of the Tiger I heavy tank in 1:48 scale. They cover the rubber tire bands of the wheels, so you spray the rim in the vehicle color and the rubber stays dark. The set is cut for the Tiger I kit from Tamiya.

What makes the running gear of the Tiger I special

The Tiger I has the densest running gear of all the commonly built machines of its day. The wheels are interleaved in no fewer than three mutually overlapping rows, so there are several times as many of them on each side as on a Pz.Kpfw.IV, and only the outer row plus strips of those beneath it stay visible. There are no return rollers at all. The second thing that has to be checked before you reach for a mask: early vehicles had wheels with a rubber tire band, later ones were given all-steel wheels with internal springing, on which there is nothing to mask. Depending on which variant your kit depicts, the set will either be fully used or not at all — so check the type of wheel on the parts.

When the finish tears off as the mask comes away

With the number of wheels a Tiger I has, a small error of routine is multiplied, and flaked paint on one wheel spoils the impression of the whole flank. A primer is therefore mandatory and has to be properly cured, not merely dry to the touch; with small parts hold out a day longer rather than less. Lift the mask with tweezers slowly and at a shallow angle just above the surface. When you feel resistance, stop pulling and first warm the spot briefly with warm air so the adhesive softens. Work on the wheels one at a time, before fitting them to their axles; once the interleaved rows are assembled there is nowhere to slip the tweezers in.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of German Second World War equipment in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers put off by the number of wheels on a Tiger running gear
  • Those who want a uniform tire band on every wheel
  • Anyone after a marked shortening of the most tedious phase of a build

Paints, glue and the kit are not included in the package.

FAQ

The wheels are interleaved in three overlapping rows, so there is a great number of them per side and once assembled you cannot reach the inner ones.

Late Tigers had wheels with internal springing and a steel rim, on which no rubber tire band is painted. Check the type of wheel on the parts of the kit, therefore.

Use a good primer, let the coats genuinely cure and lift the mask slowly at a shallow angle. If you meet resistance, warm the spot briefly with warm air.

It is cut for the kit from Tamiya. The wheels of other kits have different dimensions, so check the match beforehand.
