About product

Hauler Type 95 Kurogane 1:48 - a photo-etched set of parts

An aftermarket set made of photo-etched sheet from the Czech maker Hauler in 1:48 scale. It completes and replaces the detail of the Japanese Type 95 Kurogane cross-country car on the Hasegawa plastic kit. Note that the manufacturer offers sets for this vehicle for different base kits, so when buying you have to pick the variant matching your box. The set itself is not a model and cannot be built without a kit.

The real subject

The Type 95 Kurogane was among the first series-produced cross-country cars with all-wheel drive. The Japanese army took it into service in the second half of the 1930s and used it for reconnaissance, signals and carrying commanders. The design relied on simplicity and low weight, and an air-cooled twin-cylinder engine provided the power. The car was built in open and in closed forms.

Tools and procedure for working with photo-etch

For photo-etch it is worth getting a few things ready in advance. The basis is a hard glass or steel surface, a new scalpel or special photo-etch shears, pointed tweezers and a simple bender, which can be replaced by two razor blades and a steel ruler. Always run the bend along the etched groove and finish it with a finger rather than with pliers. Degrease the metal with alcohol or isopropyl alcohol before gluing, and use super glue applied on the tip of a piece of wire. Take the excess off at once; once dry it leaves a white film. Paint does not hold on bare metal, so always a primer, ideally sprayed in a thin coat.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building Japanese vehicles in 1:48 scale
  • anyone interested in fine-tuning soft-skinned vehicles down to the detail
  • modelers who already have the basic tools for photo-etch
  • builders of dioramas with Japanese vehicles

This is an accessory for a build, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

Each is cut for a different base kit. The parts follow the shapes of a particular box, so pick the variant matching the model you are building.

A hard surface, a sharp scalpel or photo-etch shears, pointed tweezers and a bender, for which two razor blades with a steel ruler will stand in.

Paint does not hold on smooth photo-etched sheet by itself and peels off during handling. A thin coat of primer gives adhesion and unifies the surface.
