About product

Armycast 1:48 — masks for the American insignia from 1947, part II

This item is a masking set in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Armycast. Machine-cut shapes of the national insignia of US aircraft in the form introduced in January 1947 are on self-adhesive sheets — a star in a circular field with rectangular bars at the sides and with a red bar inside the white areas. This form is still used in its basic shape today. The designation part II means that this is the second part of a larger whole, which the maker split into separate sets.

What the set is for

The masks are stuck on an already painted model and the insignia is then sprayed in paint. The result is a marking that is part of the finish rather than a film lying on the surface. That does away with decal silvering, with the visible edge of a carrier film and with the risk of a decal tearing while being transferred. A sprayed insignia also follows the riveting and the engraved lines and can be weathered, dusted and faded just like the surrounding finish.

Procedure and application tips

The surface has to be clean, degreased and smooth; on a rough matte coat the edges of the mask do not seal. Transfer the template with tweezers or a pointed wooden stick, press the edges down and spray several very thin coats at right angles to the surface — paint creeps under when it is sprayed at an angle. Let the coats dry through. Lift the mask off soon after it has dried, pulling back over itself at a sharp angle. With a multicolor insignia you work in layers: first the light color, then the further pieces of the mask are added and the remaining shades oversprayed.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building American aircraft of the postwar and current period in 1:48 scale
  • those who want to spray the markings instead of using decals
  • builders who weather a model heavily and need the insignia to age along with the finish
  • modelers repairing or adding markings on a model already under construction

The package holds masking templates only. Paints, varnish and the model are not part of it.

FAQ

They are masking templates. They are stuck on the model, the paint is sprayed over them and then they are lifted off — the resulting marking is formed by the finish itself.

A sprayed marking has no carrier film, so no silvering and no glossy edge appear. It follows the rivets and engraved lines and can be weathered just like the surrounding finish.

The maker split the set for this type of markings into several separately sold sheets. This item is the second of them.
