Pre-cut masks for painting the wheels of the American M4A3 medium tank in 1:48 scale. They cover the rubber tire band, so you spray the rim in the vehicle color and the rubber stays dark. The set is cut for the M4A3 Sherman kit from Hobby Boss.
The Sherman does not have its wheels sprung individually but grouped in bogies in pairs; a return roller also sits above each bogie. Several pairs of wheels plus the rollers therefore come to a side, that is, a great many identical rings which have to look uniform. The second peculiarity is the type of disc. Shermans used both solid pressed discs and discs with spokes and through holes. On a spoked wheel, paint sprayed at an angle gets through the openings onto the rubber tire band from behind, so a mask on the front face is not enough by itself. Before masking, therefore, look at which type of disc your kit contains.
On spoked wheels guide the airbrush square to the face of the wheel and avoid spraying at a slant from the side, where the stream passes through a hole and lands on the tire band from the other side. It also helps to stand the wheel on a flat surface while painting, so nothing is left open from behind. Deal with the classic bleeding under the edge of a mask through the order of coats: a thin coat of the rubber shade over the whole part first, then the mask and only then the rim color — any penetration is lost in a color that belongs there anyway. And expect that perfection is not needed on a running gear; dust and mud will unify small imperfections in the end.
Paints, glue and the kit are not included in the package.
